Pidgin is one of the simplest IM clients available with which you can log in to multiple services simultaneously. It's a great alternative to have instead of hosting separate clients for specific services.

Miranda IM is one of the simplest instant messengers around that also supports multiple protocols and is extremely lightweight for an IM client. It is very simple to use and is also customizable and flexible as it allows upto 350 plug-ins for you to use alongside. Miranda is open-source and can be downloaded free of cost.

3. Digsby
Digsby is another great messenger that you can download to handle most of your interaction online. Digsby goes a step ahead of others by integrating social networking into it's excellent IM client. You can update Facebook and Twitter through Digbsy and even get notifications from all your personal email accounts through Digsby.
Digsby, however, is not open-source and comes as a freeware bundled with many other applications that they offer to install. Kindly decline to install any bundled software you may not need and choose to install the IM client only.
