A more secure, faster and safer network.

OpenDNS is a free domain name resolution service that helps your network become more safer and reliable and increases browsing speed.

What is a DNS?

A Domain Name System (DNS) basically translates human-readable domain names that we use everyday (like http://www.xyz.com) into computer-readable IP addresses (eg. 207.55.177.188), the location of the resource/device that is being accessed through the domain name.

A DNS is responsible for assigning domain names and also mapping them to the IP addresses at the actual location of the resource. A DNS is usually provided by the internet service provider, but it takes more time to load websites through automatic DNS configuration.

Why OpenDNS?

OpenDNS is an attempt by its makers to speed up the ability to locate the resources by offering an alternative to an internet service provider's (ISP) DNS.

OpenDNS servers are located in strategic locations, making the entire process of accessing websites and browsing the web much easier due to this 'open' system.

OpenDNS also provides a great phishing (duplicates of official websites) filter and also corrects typos. It has a list of malicious websites, the access of which has been blocked by OpenDNS.

How does it work?

OpenDNS has provided it's public nameserver addresses for you to specify in your internet connection properties.

Free?

OpenDNS is available at absolutely no cost whatsoever.

How-To?

Apply the following steps to use OpenDNS nameservers:

1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections.

2. If you are using a Local Area Connection or a Wireless setup or a Dial-up connection, simply right-click your active connection and open the Properties option.

3. Under the 'This connection uses the following items' and locate 'Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol'. It is usually the last option in the items list. (Windows VISTA users must choose 'Internet Protocol version4 (TCP/IP v4)').

After selecting it, click the 'Properties' option just below.

4. Observe the screenshot above. Our focus is on the lower half of this. A selected option by default would be 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'.

5. Select 'Use the following DNS server addresses:'. And provide the following two OpenDNS nameserver addresses:

208 . 67 . 222 . 222
208 . 67 . 220 . 220

6. You have now set up OpenDNS on your system.

Enjoy faster browsing and a more secure internet experience with OpenDNS.
